Why is my laptop
so slow?
Almost every slow laptop comes down to one of a handful of causes. Most are fixable, and most cost far less than a replacement. Here is how to tell which one you have.
The seven usual suspects
In rough order of how often they turn out to be the problem.
1 · A mechanical hard drive
By far the most common cause on machines older than about five years. A spinning drive is dramatically slower than an SSD. Swapping it is usually the single biggest improvement available, and often the cheapest.
2 · Not enough memory
With 4GB of RAM, modern browsers alone will exhaust it and the system starts swapping to disk. 8GB is a realistic floor now; 16GB is comfortable.
3 · Too many startup programs
Software added over the years quietly loads itself at boot. Twenty background programs you never asked for will make even good hardware feel sluggish.
4 · Malware
Infections consume resources by design. Slowness alongside pop-ups or browser changes points here.
5 · Overheating
Dust-clogged fans and dried thermal paste cause the processor to throttle itself to avoid damage. A hot, loud, slow laptop is usually this.
6 · A full drive
Below roughly 10% free space, Windows has nowhere to work and performance falls off sharply.
7 · A failing drive
A drive on its way out causes freezes, long pauses and crashes. This one is urgent — it is a data-loss risk, not just a speed problem.

Check your free space
If your main drive is nearly full, clearing space alone can produce a noticeable improvement.
Restart properly
Not sleep — a full shutdown and restart. Machines left running for weeks accumulate problems that a restart clears.
Look at startup programs
On Windows, Task Manager has a Startup tab. Disable things you do not recognise or need at boot.
Notice the pattern
Slow all the time, or only in a browser? Hot to the touch? Loud fans? Those details narrow the cause considerably.
When it is not worth repairing
Honest answer: sometimes replacement is the right call.
Cracked case or hinges
Structural damage on an older machine usually means money better spent elsewhere.
Failed motherboard
Board-level failure often approaches the cost of a replacement machine.
Very old hardware
Beyond roughly eight years, parts availability and compatibility start working against you.
